Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, "Murata") has added the MRMS591P and MRMS581P omnidirectional AMR sensors (hereinafter, new sensors) to its lineup of magnetic sensors. These new products are capable of detecting magnetic fields from all directions (XYZ multiaxial direction). Mass production for these products has already begun.
In recent years, there has been a growing need for highly secure functionality in the smart meter and security industries. Fraudulent activity has become a pressing concern. For example, the meter functionality of smart meters can be disabled simply by bringing a strong magnet near the device. Traditional magnetic sensors can only detect magnetic fields in a single axial direction, making accurate detection of magnetic fields in multiaxial directions difficult. In response, Murata has applied its proprietary technologies and has developed an omnidirectional AMR sensor capable of detecting magnetic fields even when the direction of the magnetic field is not fixed. Traditional magnetic sensors generate magnetic resistance for ON output to detect magnetic fields only in a single axial direction. In contrast, new sensors have carefully designed resistance patterns, allowing them to switch between ON and OFF regardless of magnetic force line direction.
There has also been a growing need for lower power consumption, as the spread of IoT devices has resulted in more applications where sensors are being operated by battery. New sensors contain a built-in IC circuit to perform ON/OFF output processing. However, the circuit operates intermittently internally, allowing for magnetic detection to be performed at lower power than components that constantly operate. The internal circuit in MRMS581P has been further optimized compared with previous products, resulting in an extremely low consumption current of 0.3 µA at 3 V.
The extremely low consumption current and wide detection area mean there is only minimal risk of malfunction or failure from the lead switch, making it an ideal choice for replacing high-reliability magnetic switches.
